Booderee National Park is a stunning Aboriginal-owned park on the southern shores of Jervis Bay, renowned for its white-sand beaches, clear turquoise waters, and rich Indigenous culture. Managed jointly by the Wreck Bay Aboriginal Community and Parks Australia, the park offers a pristine natural escape with excellent swimming, snorkelling, bushwalking, and wildlife spotting. The name 'Booderee' means 'bay of plenty' in the local Dhurga language, and it truly lives up to its name.
Highlights & What to See
- Murrays Beach – A picture-perfect crescent of white sand lapped by crystal-clear water, ideal for swimming and snorkelling. The calm, sheltered bay is also a great spot for kayaking.
- Steamers Beach – A wilder, more exposed beach on the ocean side, perfect for long walks and beachcombing. Accessible via a scenic walking track from Murrays Beach.
- Booderee Botanic Gardens – The only Aboriginal-owned botanic gardens in Australia, showcasing native plants and offering insights into traditional Indigenous uses of flora. The gardens are a peaceful spot for a picnic.
- Whale Watching – During migration season (May–November), humpback whales can be spotted from Cape St George Lighthouse and other lookout points. The view from the lighthouse ruins is spectacular.
- Aboriginal Heritage Walks – Guided tours led by local Aboriginal rangers provide a deeper understanding of the area's cultural significance, including middens, rock art, and stories of the Wreck Bay people.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan at least a full day to explore the park's highlights. Arrive early to secure a spot at Murrays Beach and spend the morning swimming and snorkelling. After lunch, visit the Botanic Gardens and take the short walk to Cape St George Lighthouse for panoramic views. If you have a second day, consider hiking the longer trails, such as the 10km loop to Steamers Beach, or joining a cultural tour. The park is easily combined with a weekend trip to Jervis Bay or the South Coast.
