Plummeting 120 metres into a fern-clad gorge, Mapleton Falls is one of the Sunshine Coast hinterland's most dramatic natural spectacles. Unlike many Aussie waterfalls that dwindle to a trickle in dry months, Mapleton Falls maintains a respectable flow year-round, thanks to the catchment of the Obi Obi Creek. The viewing platform at the top delivers a vertigo-inducing panorama of the falls and the patchwork of rainforest stretching to the coast. It's a quick, family-friendly stop that packs a visual punch — perfect for stretching your legs on a drive between Noosa and the Glass House Mountains.
Highlights & What to See
- Mapleton Falls Lookout — A short wheelchair-accessible path leads to the main platform, offering unobstructed views of the waterfall and the Mary Valley. Bring binoculars to spot peregrine falcons that sometimes nest on the cliff face.
- Wompoo Circuit — This 2.5 km loop trail descends into the rainforest below the falls. It's a moderate walk with stairs, rewarding you with close-up views of strangler figs, king ferns, and the creek itself. Allow 45 minutes to an hour.
- Picnic Area & BBQ Facilities — The grassy area near the car park has tables and free electric barbecues. It's a lovely spot for a lunch break, with the sound of the falls in the background.
- Mapleton Village — Just a 2-minute drive away, this charming hinterland town has a bakery, a pub, and the Mapleton Tavern, which serves hearty meals with valley views from its beer garden.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 30 to 45 minutes at the lookout and picnic area. If you tackle the Wompoo Circuit, budget another hour. Half a day is ample if you combine it with a meal in Mapleton village and a stop at nearby Kondalilla National Park. The falls are at their most photogenic in the late afternoon when the sun lights up the spray.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Kondalilla National Park — Just 10 minutes south, Kondalilla Falls plunges 90 metres into a swimming hole (when conditions allow). The park has a network of walking trails, including the 4.8 km Kondalilla Falls Circuit.
- Montville — This quaint hillside village, 15 minutes away, is known for its craft shops, galleries, and the famous Montville Café for scones with jam and cream.
- Noosa — A 40-minute drive east brings you to Noosa's national park, beaches, and the bustling Hastings Street dining scene.
- Glass House Mountains — Head south for 30 minutes to see these iconic volcanic plugs. The lookout at Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve offers a superb panorama.
- Sunshine Coast Hinterland Great Walk — For serious hikers, this multi-day trail passes through Mapleton and Kondalilla, linking several national parks.
