Main Beach is the vibrant, sun-drenched heart of Byron Bay, a sweeping arc of golden sand that lives up to its legendary reputation. With the iconic Cape Byron lighthouse as a backdrop and the Pacific rollers crashing in, this is the quintessential Australian beach experience. The patrolled swimming area, excellent surf breaks, and laid-back coastal vibe make it a magnet for travellers, but there’s plenty of space to find your own patch of sand.
Highlights & What to See
- The beach itself – perfect for swimming, sunbaking, and people-watching. The southern end is popular with surfers, while the northern end is quieter and great for families.
- Byron Bay Surf School – a brilliant spot to take a lesson, with gentle waves ideal for beginners.
- Cape Byron Walking Track – a 3.7 km coastal walk from Main Beach to the lighthouse, offering breathtaking views, whale watching (June–November), and the chance to spot dolphins.
- Byron Bay Markets – held on the first Sunday of the month at Butler Street Reserve, showcasing local art, crafts, and food.
- The Pass – a world-famous right-hand point break just north of Main Beach, great for experienced surfers or watching from the headland.
- Lighthouse Road cafes and shops – a stroll from the beach, with excellent coffee, acai bowls, and boutique stores.
Suggested Time to Spend
Main Beach is a place to lose track of time. For a relaxed visit, allow at least half a day to swim, sunbathe, and wander the foreshore. To also walk to the lighthouse and explore the town, dedicate a full day. If you’re a surfer or keen walker, consider two days to fully soak up the coastal trails and the village atmosphere.
