K'gari (Fraser Island) is the world's largest sand island, a World Heritage-listed wonder off the coast of Queensland. Here, ancient rainforests grow straight out of silica sand, crystal-clear perched lakes shimmer in the bush, and wild dingoes roam the long, windswept beaches. It's a raw, untamed landscape that feels like nowhere else on earth—a must for nature lovers and adventure seekers on an east coast Australia road trip.
Highlights & What to See
- Lake McKenzie – A stunning perched lake with dazzling white sand and pure, rain-fed water so clear you can see every grain beneath the surface. Swim, float, and soak up the surreal beauty.
- Seventy-Five Mile Beach – The island's main 'highway'—a vast, hard-packed beach that doubles as an airstrip. Drive along it to see the rusted hull of the Maheno shipwreck and the coloured sands of The Pinnacles.
- Indian Head – A rocky headland offering panoramic views of the coast and a prime spot to spot sharks, rays, and turtles in the surf below.
- Eli Creek – A fast-flowing freshwater creek perfect for a lazy float downstream. Grab a tube or just wade in—it's the island's favourite natural water park.
- Rainforest Walk – Explore the Central Station area, where towering satinay and brush box trees thrive on pure sand. The short Wanggoolba Creek boardwalk is a peaceful introduction to this botanical marvel.
- Lake Wabby – A deep green lake fed by a massive sandblow; hike over the dunes for a dramatic contrast of emerald water and white sand.
- Dingoes – K'gari is home to purebred dingoes. Observe them from a distance and never feed them—they are wild and protected.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give K'gari at least two to three days—ideally three if you can. A full day lets you do the classic 4WD drive up Seventy-Five Mile Beach to Indian Head and back, while a second day allows for inland exploration of the lakes and rainforest. If you're short on time, a day trip from Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach can hit the highlights, but you'll miss the magic of an overnight stay. Most visitors join a tag-along 4WD tour or self-drive with a 4WD vehicle—essential for the sandy tracks.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Rainbow Beach – A colourful coastal town with a spectacular coloured sand cliff, a great launching point for 4WD trips to the island.
- Bundaberg – Famous for its rum distillery and as a nesting site for loggerhead turtles (November–March), about 1.5 hours north of Hervey Bay.
- Noosa – A stylish surf-and-bush destination with the Noosa National Park, 2 hours south, ideal for a coastal contrast.
- Fraser Coast – The broader region includes the Great Sandy National Park and the tranquil town of Maryborough, rich in heritage.
