This protected rock formation, part of the Cape Byron Marine Park, sits in the path of the warm East Australian Current, attracting an incredible diversity of fish, rays, turtles, and sharks. Highlights & What to See
- Diving & Snorkelling with Grey Nurse Sharks: Julian Rocks is famous for its resident grey nurse sharks, which can be seen year-round in the caves and gutters. These gentle giants are the main draw, alongside leopard sharks, wobbegongs, and eagle rays.
- Sea Turtles and Manta Rays: Green and loggerhead turtles are common, often seen grazing on the rocky reefs. During summer, manta rays and even whale sharks pass through.
- Colourful Coral and Fish Life: The reserve hosts vibrant soft corals and a kaleidoscope of fish, including clownfish, moray eels, and schools of trevally. The 'Cod Hole' is a popular spot for potato cod.
- Humpback Whale Watching (June–November): From the surface or on a boat trip, you can often see humpback whales migrating along the coast, sometimes breaching right near the rocks.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least half a day. Most visitors take a 2–3 hour guided dive or snorkel tour from Byron Bay, which includes gear, boat transfer, and a briefing. If you're a certified diver, you can book two-tank dives to explore more sites. Arrive in the morning for the calmest conditions and best visibility. Non-divers can still enjoy the marine life on a glass-bottom boat tour.
