Perched on a forested ridge in the Tomaree National Park, Gan Gan Lookout delivers one of the most breathtaking panoramas on the NSW coast. From this elevated platform, you can sweep your gaze over the sparkling waters of Port Stephens, the rugged headlands of Yacaaba and Tomaree, and the vast blue expanse of the Pacific Ocean. It’s a classic stop on any Port Stephens road trip, offering a quick but unforgettable hit of coastal grandeur.
Highlights & What to See
- 360-degree panoramic views – The lookout faces east over the bay, but on a clear day you can also spot the distant Barrington Tops to the north and the Myall Lakes to the south.
- Tomaree National Park walks – Combine your visit with a hike on the nearby Tomaree Head Summit walk (a steep but rewarding 2.2 km return) for even loftier views over Nelson Bay.
- Whale-watching vantage – During migration season (May–November), the lookout is a prime spot to see humpbacks breaching in the bay below.
- Sunrise and sunset – The platform faces east, making it a magical sunrise spot; for sunset, head to the western side of the headland.
- Picnic facilities – A few benches and a grassy area make it a pleasant place to enjoy a coffee while soaking up the scenery.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 20–30 minutes at the lookout itself – enough time to absorb the views, snap photos, and read the interpretive signs about local Aboriginal heritage and the area’s wartime history (the site was a radar station during WWII). If you’re adding a walk, allow 1.5–2 hours total. It’s an easy detour on a self-drive loop around Port Stephens, and fits nicely between a morning at Shoal Bay and lunch in Nelson Bay.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Shoal Bay – A gorgeous swimming beach with calm waters, just a 5-minute drive from the lookout.
- Nelson Bay – The main town of Port Stephens, with a lively marina, dolphin-watching cruises, and excellent seafood restaurants.
- Tomaree Head Summit – A short but steep climb offering even more dramatic coastal views.
- Stockton Beach – Famous for its vast sand dunes and 4WD adventures, about 25 minutes south.
- Myall Lakes National Park – A haven for kayaking, birdwatching, and camping, a 40-minute drive north.
