Fingal Bay is a serene coastal escape on the southern side of the Port Stephens peninsula, where a sweeping arc of white sand meets crystal-clear waters and a dramatic headland crowned by a historic lighthouse. It’s the kind of place where you can have long stretches of beach almost to yourself, especially on weekdays, and where the pace of life slows to a gentle rhythm. The bay is protected from the swell, making it a safe swimming spot for families, while the adjacent Tomaree National Park offers superb coastal walks and lookout points.
Highlights & What to See
- Fingal Bay Beach – A stunning 2.5 km stretch of soft sand, perfect for swimming, paddleboarding, or simply lazing under the sun. The gentle waves make it ideal for children.
- Fingal Headland & Lighthouse – Climb the short but steep path to the historic Fingal Lighthouse (built 1872) for panoramic views over the bay, Port Stephens, and the Pacific Ocean. Keep an eye out for migrating whales (June–November).
- Tomaree Head Summit Walk – A challenging but rewarding 2 km return hike from nearby Shoal Bay that offers breathtaking 360-degree views of the coastline, islands, and the bay itself.
- Fingal Bay Rock Pool – A natural ocean rock pool at the southern end of the beach, popular for a safe dip when the tide is high.
- Dolphin Watching & Kayaking – The bay is a launch point for kayak tours that often encounter bottlenose dolphins feeding and playing in the calm waters.
Suggested Time to Spend
Fingal Bay can be enjoyed in a half-day visit, but it’s best savoured over a full day to combine beach time, the headland walk, and a picnic lunch. If you’re staying in Port Stephens, allocate at least a morning or afternoon here – it’s an easy 10-minute drive from Nelson Bay. For hikers, the Tomaree Head walk takes about 1–1.5 hours, so plan to arrive early to avoid the midday heat.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Shoal Bay – A beautiful beach just north of Fingal, with a relaxed vibe and excellent cafés.
- Tomaree National Park – Extends beyond the headland, offering several bushwalking trails and secluded beaches.
- Port Stephens – The broader region includes the dune system at Stockton Bight and the fishing village of Tea Gardens.
- Myall Lakes National Park – A vast network of lakes and forests about an hour north, ideal for kayaking and camping.
