Plunging more than 100 metres into a fern-lined gorge, Ebor Falls is one of the New England region's most dramatic natural spectacles. Part of the Guy Fawkes River National Park, the waterfall cascades over ancient basalt cliffs formed by volcanic activity millions of years ago. The two-tiered drop – the Upper Falls and Lower Falls – can be viewed from well-maintained lookouts that offer heart-stopping perspectives. The surrounding park is a haven for birdlife, including glossy black-cockatoos and wedge-tailed eagles, and the walking trails through snow-gum woodlands and wildflower-dotted heath make this a rewarding stop for nature lovers driving between the coast and the inland.
Highlights & What to See
- Upper Falls Lookout: A short wheelchair-accessible boardwalk leads to a panoramic viewing platform directly opposite the main cascade – the spray on your face is invigorating.
- Lower Falls Walk: A 1.4 km return trail descends through cool rainforest to a lower lookout, offering a different angle of the falls and the gorge's layered rock formations.
- Guy Fawkes River National Park: Beyond the falls, explore the park's wild landscapes – rugged gorges, eucalypt forests, and pockets of subtropical rainforest that shelter lyrebirds and wallabies.
- Waterfall Way: Ebor Falls is a highlight of this scenic drive linking the coast to the tablelands; the route passes other waterfalls, national parks, and charming country towns.
- Seasonal Wildflowers: In spring (September–November), the heathlands around the falls burst into colour with flannel flowers, boronia, and orchids.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1–2 hours to appreciate both lookouts and do the short Lower Falls walk. If you're combining the visit with a picnic or a longer exploration of the national park's walking trails, set aside half a day. The falls are often busy on weekends and during school holidays, so arriving early or late afternoon ensures a quieter experience with better light for photography.
