Charlestown, a leafy suburb of Greater Newcastle, is a convenient base for exploring the Port Stephens region. While not a tourist destination in itself, it offers excellent shopping, dining, and easy access to Lake Macquarie and the Hunter Valley. The Charlestown Square shopping centre is a major draw, but the real appeal lies in its proximity to natural attractions.
Highlights & What to See
- Charlestown Square – One of the largest shopping centres in regional NSW, with over 250 stores, a cinema, and diverse dining options. It’s a practical stop for supplies or a rainy-day activity.
- Glenrock State Conservation Area – Just a short drive away, this coastal reserve offers excellent bushwalking, mountain biking, and Aboriginal rock art sites. The Yuelarbah Track leads to a scenic lookout over the ocean.
- Lake Macquarie – Australia’s largest coastal saltwater lake, perfect for sailing, kayaking, and fishing. Popular spots include Belmont and Swansea, both a 15-minute drive from Charlestown.
- Blackbutt Reserve – A free wildlife park in nearby New Lambton Heights, where you can see kangaroos, koalas, and wombats in natural bushland settings. Great for families.
Suggested Time to Spend
Charlestown itself can be covered in a few hours if you’re shopping or grabbing a meal. However, to appreciate the surrounding natural attractions, plan for at least a full day. Combine a morning walk in Glenrock with an afternoon on Lake Macquarie, or use Charlestown as a lunch stop en route to the Hunter Valley or Port Stephens.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Newcastle – The vibrant city centre, with its historic architecture, beaches, and thriving café culture, is just 15 minutes away.
- Port Stephens – Head north to Nelson Bay for dolphin cruises, sand dunes, and coastal walks – about 45 minutes by car.
- Hunter Valley – Australia’s premier wine region, with cellar doors and gourmet dining, is an hour’s drive west.
- Lake Macquarie – Explore the lake’s foreshore parks, villages, and water activities – a 10-minute drive from Charlestown.
