Blue Mountains
Rising dramatically from the Sydney basin, the Blue Mountains offer a wild, eucalypt-scented escape into a world of sandstone cliffs, ancient rainforests, and plunging waterfalls. This World Heritage-listed region is a paradise for hikers, nature lovers, and anyone craving crisp mountain air and sweeping valley views. Despite its proximity to Sydney, the Blue Mountains feel a world away, with charming mountain villages like Katoomba and Leura providing cosy bases for exploration.
Highlights & What to See
- Three Sisters Lookout – The iconic rock formation at Echo Point, best seen at sunrise or sunset when the sandstone glows orange. The view across the Jamison Valley is unforgettable.
- Scenic World – Ride the steepest passenger railway in the world, glide above the canopy on the Scenic Skyway, or walk the elevated boardwalk through ancient rainforest.
- Wentworth Falls – A stunning multi-tiered waterfall reached via a network of walking tracks. The National Pass trail offers dramatic cliff-edge views.
- Govetts Leap Lookout – A quieter viewpoint in Blackheath with a jaw-dropping panorama of the Grose Valley and the Bridal Veil Falls.
- Jenolan Caves – A spectacular limestone cave system with guided tours through illuminated chambers, underground rivers, and ancient formations.
- Grand Canyon Track – A classic six-kilometre loop that descends into a lush, fern-filled gorge with sandstone walls and trickling creeks – one of the region’s finest day walks.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend two to three days in the Blue Mountains, which allows time for a major walk, a visit to Scenic World, and exploring a couple of different lookouts and villages. If you’re short on time, a long day trip from Sydney is possible (allow at least 10 hours), but you’ll only scratch the surface. For a deeper experience, base yourself in Katoomba or Leura for two nights – you’ll have time for a full-day hike, the Jenolan Caves, and leisurely cafe stops.
