Step back in time at Timbertown Heritage Park, a living-history museum in Wauchope that vividly recreates a late-19th-century Australian timber town. The scent of fresh sawdust and the clatter of steam machinery set the scene as you wander among historic buildings, costumed interpreters, and working exhibits. It’s an immersive, family-friendly experience that brings the region’s logging heritage to life.
Highlights & What to See
- Steam Train Ride: Climb aboard a narrow-gauge steam locomotive for a short journey through the bush, past a re-created sawmill and logging camp.
- Working Sawmill: Watch the massive steam-driven saws in action – the centrepiece of the park, demonstrating how timber was milled a century ago.
- Bullock Team Demonstration: See powerful bullocks haul logs just as they did before trucks and tractors, with informative commentary from the teamster.
- Historic Village: Explore a schoolhouse, blacksmith’s forge, general store, and a settler’s cottage, all furnished with period artefacts.
- Whip-Cracking & Bush Crafts: Catch daily demonstrations of whip-cracking, wood-chopping, and traditional crafts like rope-making and wood-turning.
- Nature Walk & Bush Tucker Garden: Stroll a short loop through remnant forest, learning about native plants used by Aboriginal people and early settlers.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for at least 3–4 hours to enjoy the main exhibits, catch the steam train, and see a couple of demonstrations. The park opens around 9:30am and the last entry is mid-afternoon, so arriving early gives you the best chance to experience the full daily program. Families often make a half-day outing of it, combining a picnic lunch on the grounds.
