Plunging 200 metres into a fern-clad gorge in the Bulga National Park, Ellenborough Falls is one of Australia’s tallest single-drop waterfalls and a spectacular stop on a drive through the Mid North Coast. The thunder of water hitting the pool below, the mist on your face, and the ancient rainforest all around make this a sensory thrill that’s well off the main tourist trail.
Highlights & What to See
- The main lookout: A short, wheelchair-accessible boardwalk leads to a platform perched opposite the falls – the spray here is invigorating and the views across the gorge are breathtaking.
- The plunge pool walk: For a real adventure, take the steep 800-metre track (with many steps) down to the base of the falls. You’ll feel the full force of the water and can cool off in the pool (careful – it’s deep and cold).
- Picnic areas: There are grassy spots near the top with barbecue facilities – perfect for a lunch break with a view.
- Rainforest flora: Keep an eye out for towering flooded gums, tree ferns, and maybe even a lyrebird scratching in the leaf litter.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend about 1–2 hours here. If you only do the lookout and a short wander, an hour is enough. If you tackle the plunge-pool descent (allow 30–40 minutes down and 45–60 minutes back up, plus time at the bottom), budget closer to 2–3 hours. The walk is steep and can be slippery after rain, so wear sturdy shoes and take water.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Port Macquarie: The coastal hub is an hour’s drive east, with beaches, the Koala Hospital, and a lively café scene – a great base for a night or two.
- Wauchope: This historic timber town is on the way from Port Macquarie; stop in for a coffee and a stroll along the Hastings River.
- Bago Vineyard: A family-run winery near Wauchope offering tastings and a lovely outdoor setting – a nice contrast to the wilderness.
- Mount Seaview Resort: A historic guesthouse and pub in the mountains, perfect for a meal or a drink with valley views.
- Comboyne: A tiny village perched on the escarpment, with more walking tracks and lookouts – ideal for extending your rainforest adventure.
