Stretching for 32 kilometres along the coast north of Newcastle, the Stockton Bight Sand Dunes form the largest moving sand dune system in the Southern Hemisphere. This immense, otherworldly landscape of quartz sand rises up to 40 metres high and shifts constantly with the wind, creating a dramatic backdrop for adventure and solitude just a short drive from Port Macquarie. The dunes are also culturally significant, with Indigenous heritage sites and a history of sand mining that has shaped the area's character.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Half a day is sufficient for a quad bike tour or sandboarding session, but if you plan to explore the full length of the dunes by 4WD or take a cultural tour, set aside a full day. Combine with a morning at the nearby Stockton Beach or a lunch stop in the small town of Anna Bay for a relaxed pace.
