Stretching for 32 kilometres along the coast north of Newcastle, the Stockton Bight Sand Dunes form the largest moving sand dune system in the Southern Hemisphere. This immense, otherworldly landscape of quartz sand rises up to 40 metres high and shifts constantly with the wind, creating a dramatic backdrop for adventure and solitude just a short drive from Port Macquarie. The dunes are also culturally significant, with Indigenous heritage sites and a history of sand mining that has shaped the area's character.
Highlights & What to See
- Quad biking and sandboarding: The dunes are a premier spot for adrenaline-pumping quad bike tours and sandboarding down the steep slopes – a must for thrill-seekers.
- Worimi Conservation Lands: Part of the dunes are within this protected area, where you can join guided Aboriginal cultural tours to learn about the Worimi people’s connection to the land.
- Stockton Beach 4WD access: Drive onto the beach (permit required) and explore the vast expanse of sand, with opportunities for fishing, spotting shipwrecks, and enjoying uninterrupted coastal views.
- Birdwatching and wildlife: Keep an eye out for migratory birds, sea eagles, and the occasional kangaroo that venture onto the dunes.
- Sunset photography: The dunes take on a golden glow at sunset, offering spectacular photo opportunities with the ocean in the background.
