Seal Rocks is a sleepy coastal hamlet on the NSW Mid North Coast that feels like a secret well-kept by those who’ve found it. With its blinding-white sand, turquoise water, and a historic lighthouse perched on a rocky headland, it’s the kind of place where you can hear yourself think – and the waves crash. The village itself is tiny (don’t expect a supermarket), but the raw beauty of the surrounding Myall Lakes National Park makes it a must for nature lovers and photographers.
Highlights & What to See
- Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse: Climb the headland for panoramic views of the coastline and, in season, spot humpback whales migrating past. The lighthouse precinct is also a great picnic spot.
- Seal Rocks Beach (Main Beach): A stunning crescent of sand that’s patrolled in summer – perfect for swimming, bodysurfing, or just lazing. The crystal-clear water is inviting but be mindful of rips.
- Boat Harbour Beach: A short walk north, this sheltered cove is ideal for snorkelling and kayaking when conditions are calm. Check the tide as it can disappear at high tide.
- Myall Lakes National Park: The park surrounds Seal Rocks and offers bushwalks, birdwatching, and the chance to see goannas and wallabies. The Mungo Brush Rainforest Walk is a highlight.
- Surfing at Treachery Beach: A short drive south, this exposed beach is a favourite among experienced surfers for its consistent swells. Not for beginners.
Suggested Time to Spend
Seal Rocks is a day-trip destination from Port Macquarie (about 1.5 hours north) or Forster (30 minutes north), but to truly unwind, stay a night or two. Spend a full day exploring the lighthouse, swimming, and walking in the national park. If you’re self-driving, combine it with a loop through the Myall Lakes region – the road in is sealed but narrow, so take it slow.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Forster & Tuncurry: A 30-minute drive north, these twin towns offer great beaches, the Forster-Tuncurry Bridge walk, and the Booti Booti National Park.
- Myall Lakes National Park: Extend your stay with canoeing on the lakes, fishing, or camping at Mungo Brush.
- Port Macquarie: Head north for the Koala Hospital, coastal walk, and historic settlement.
- Boomerang Beach & Blueys Beach: Just south of Seal Rocks, these are popular surf beaches with a relaxed vibe and a few cafés.
- The Great Lakes Way: A scenic drive that connects Seal Rocks to the Hunter Valley via the lakes region – perfect for a multi-day road trip.
