Nestled on the Camden Haven River, Laurieton Historic Village is a charming open-air museum that brings the region's timber and maritime past to life. With its collection of original and relocated buildings, it offers a wonderfully immersive step back into 19th-century coastal life, complete with friendly volunteer guides who love to share stories.
Highlights & What to See
- Pioneer Cottages & Schoolhouse – Wander through authentically furnished homes and a one-room school, where you can almost hear the scratch of slate pencils.
- Blacksmith’s Forge & Sawpit – Watch live demonstrations of traditional blacksmithing and pit-sawing, a gritty reminder of the area’s timber industry.
- Historic Machinery Shed – Marvel at vintage steam engines, logging equipment, and a rare 1920s fire engine.

- Laurieton Memorial Hall Museum – Housed in the village’s main hall, this museum displays local memorabilia, including Aboriginal artefacts and maritime relics.

Plan for about 1.5 to 2 hours to explore the village at a leisurely pace, including time for a chat with the volunteers. It’s best visited in the morning when it’s cooler and the light is soft for photos. Combine with a picnic by the river or a coffee at one of Laurieton’s cafés to round out a half-day outing.
