Fish Rock Cave, a remarkable underwater sea cave near South West Rocks on the NSW Mid North Coast, is one of Australia’s premier dive sites. This 125-metre-long tunnel, carved through a rocky island, teems with marine life and offers an otherworldly experience for divers and snorkellers alike. The cave’s unique geology and clear waters make it a must-visit for adventurous travellers exploring the Port Macquarie region.
Highlights & What to See
- Swim-through cave system: The main attraction is the tunnel that runs right through Fish Rock Island, with two entrances – the ‘Cathedral’ on the ocean side and a smaller opening on the western side. Inside, shafts of sunlight filter through the cracks, creating a magical atmosphere.
- Grey nurse sharks: The cave is a well-known aggregation site for these gentle, endangered sharks. From late autumn to spring, dozens can be seen resting in the sandy gutters inside the cave – a thrilling sight for divers.
- Rich marine biodiversity: Outside the cave, explore the surrounding boulders and ledges where you’ll find wobbegongs, eagle rays, turtles, and schools of tropical fish. The site is also a hotspot for leafy seadragons and cuttlefish.
- Snorkelling options: While the cave is best experienced by certified divers, snorkellers can enjoy the clear waters around the island, particularly on the western side where the reef is vibrant and accessible.
- South West Rocks township: The nearby coastal village offers a relaxed vibe, with cafes, a historic gaol, and beautiful beaches like Horseshoe Bay – perfect for unwinding after a dive.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors dedicate a full day to Fish Rock Cave, as it’s accessible only by boat from South West Rocks (about a 15-minute ride). A typical trip involves two dives or a dive and snorkel, allowing you to explore both the cave and the outer reef. If you’re not diving, a half-day snorkelling trip is enough. Combine it with a morning exploring the town or the nearby Smoky Cape Lighthouse for a rewarding day out.
