Just south of Port Macquarie, Cunninghame Lake National Park is a serene coastal haven where the landscape shifts from sparkling lake waters to windswept dunes and lush paperbark forests. This protected area wraps around the tidal Cunninghame Lake, offering a peaceful escape for kayakers, birdwatchers, and anyone craving a quiet paddle or shoreline stroll. The park feels wonderfully off the beaten path, with few crowds even in peak season.
Highlights & What to See
- Kayaking on Cunninghame Lake – Paddle across the calm, mirror-like waters of the lake, weaving through narrow channels lined with mangroves. Keep an eye out for pelicans, black swans, and ospreys.
- Walking Trails – The 5 km Cunninghame Lake Loop Trail takes you through coastal heath and eucalypt forest, with boardwalks over wetlands and lookouts over the lake. The 2 km Dune Walk climbs to a viewing platform with sweeping ocean views.
- Birdwatching – The park is a hotspot for waterbirds, including herons, egrets, and the striking white-bellied sea eagle. Bring binoculars for the best sightings.
- Picnic by the Shore – Several grassy picnic spots with tables and barbecues sit right by the lake, perfect for a relaxed lunch with a view.
- Fishing – Cast a line from the lake shore or from a kayak for bream, flathead, and whiting. A NSW fishing licence is required.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ideal: spend two to three hours kayaking or walking the loop trail, then enjoy a picnic by the lake. If you’re a keen birdwatcher or want to explore both trails, allow a full day. The park is compact enough that you can easily combine it with a morning at nearby beaches or a winery visit.
