Port Macquarie's Coastal Walk is a stunning 9-kilometre stretch of coastline that offers a sensory feast of ocean vistas, lush rainforest pockets, and dramatic headlands. This easy-to-moderate track connects the town's best beaches and landmarks, making it a must-do for outdoor enthusiasts and casual strollers alike. Along the way, you'll be treated to panoramic views of the Tasman Sea, with opportunities to spot dolphins, whales (during migration season), and a variety of seabirds.
Highlights & What to See
- Tacking Point Lighthouse: Australia's third-oldest lighthouse, perched on a rocky headland with sweeping coastal views and a prime whale-watching spot.
- Shelly Beach: A sheltered, family-friendly beach with calm waters and a popular picnic spot at the northern end of the walk.
- Flynns Beach: A patrolled surf beach with a lively café scene and excellent swimming conditions.
- Miners Beach: A clothing-optional beach nestled between rugged cliffs, offering a more secluded and natural experience.
- Koala Hospital Access: The walk passes near the Port Macquarie Koala Hospital; a short detour lets you visit this renowned wildlife rehabilitation centre.
- Coastal Rainforest Sections: Several stretches of the track wind through remnant littoral rainforest, with towering bangalow palms and birdlife.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least 2.5 to 3 hours to walk the full one-way route from the Town Beach to Tacking Point Lighthouse, or longer if you stop for swims, photography, or a coffee at one of the beachside cafés. Many walkers prefer to do it as a one-way trip using a shuttle or taxi back to the start. For a more leisurely experience, split it into two halves: the southern section (Town Beach to Flynns Beach) is flatter and easier, while the northern section (Flynns Beach to Tacking Point) involves more undulations and offers the best views.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Port Macquarie Town Centre: Explore the historic buildings, boutique shops, and waterfront restaurants after your walk.
- Koala Hospital: A short walk inland from the Coastal Walk, this must-visit sanctuary cares for injured koalas and offers educational talks.
- Sea Acres Rainforest Centre: A boardwalk through a coastal rainforest with guided tours and a canopy walkway, just a few minutes' drive from the walk's midpoint.
- Hastings River: Take a river cruise or kayak trip to see the area from a different perspective, with mangroves and birdlife.
- Camden Haven: A scenic drive south to the Camden Haven region offers beautiful beaches, national parks, and the charming town of Laurieton.
