Perched on the New England Tableland at over 1000 metres, Armidale is a city of crisp air, cathedral spires, and spectacular autumn foliage. This university town blends Victorian-era architecture with a thriving arts scene, making it a cultured stop on any New South Wales road trip. Surrounded by national parks and gorges, it’s also the gateway to some of the state’s most dramatic landscapes.

- New England Regional Art Museum (NERAM) – home to a superb collection of Australian art, including the renowned Howard Hinton and Chandler Coventry collections. The café and sculpture garden are a bonus.

- Oxley Wild Rivers National Park – just east of town, this UNESCO World Heritage-listed park boasts deep gorges, waterfalls, and lookouts like Wollomombi Falls (one of Australia’s highest).
- Saumarez Homestead – a beautifully preserved 1880s pastoral estate with original furnishings, gardens, and farm buildings. It offers a vivid glimpse into colonial life.
- Armidale Heritage Walk – a self-guided stroll past grand Victorian and Federation-era buildings, including the old post office and courthouse. Pick up a map from the visitor centre.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two days is ideal to soak up Armidale’s cultural attractions and explore the surrounding gorges. Spend the first day in town visiting NERAM, the cathedral, and Saumarez Homestead. On day two, drive to the national park lookouts and do a short bushwalk. If you’re pressed for time, a single overnight stop will let you see the highlights.
