Timbarra Beach is a secluded, unpatrolled stretch of golden sand just south of Port Macquarie, offering a serene escape from the busier city beaches. Backed by low dunes and coastal bushland, it's a favourite among locals for long walks, beach fishing, and spotting migrating whales between June and November. The lack of development means you'll often have the place almost to yourself, especially on weekdays.
Highlights & What to See
- Peaceful Solitude: Escape the crowds on this quiet beach; perfect for a peaceful stroll or a picnic with ocean views.
- Coastal Walk: Follow the track from the car park along the headland for panoramic views of the coastline and, in season, humpback whales.
- Beach Fishing: Cast a line from the sand or the rocks at the southern end; bream, whiting, and flathead are common catches.
- Rock Pools at Low Tide: Explore the small rock platforms at the southern end, teeming with crabs, sea stars, and tiny fish.
- Dolphin Spotting: Bottlenose dolphins frequently cruise just beyond the breakers, especially in the early morning.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ideal: spend an hour or two walking the beach and exploring the rock pools, then relax with a book or a picnic. If you're into fishing, allow an extra hour or two. Combine with a visit to nearby Lighthouse Beach or Tacking Point Lighthouse for a full morning or afternoon.
