Smoky Cape is a dramatic headland on the Mid North Coast of NSW, where the lush green hills of Hat Head National Park meet the wild Pacific Ocean. Named by Captain Cook for the smoke-like spray that often shrouds its cliffs, this is a place of raw coastal beauty, historic lighthouses, and exceptional whale-watching. It’s a perfect stop for travellers driving between Sydney and Brisbane, offering a quieter, more rugged alternative to the bustling beaches further south.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Most visitors spend 2–3 hours exploring the lighthouse, walking a short trail, and watching for whales. If you’re staying overnight in one of the lighthouse cottages or combining Smoky Cape with a day in Hat Head National Park, allow a full day to truly soak in the atmosphere. The area is best visited in the morning when the light is soft and the sea breeze is fresh.
