Seal Rocks
Seal Rocks is a sleepy coastal hamlet that feels like a secret whispered among New South Wales surfers and road-trippers. With its pristine white-sand beaches, turquoise waters, and a laid-back vibe that’s almost timeless, this is the kind of place where you can watch dolphins play from the shore and feel the salt spray on your face without a crowd in sight. It’s a must-stop on any Great Lakes or Mid North Coast itinerary.
Highlights & What to See
- Seal Rocks Beach – A stunning crescent of sand perfect for swimming, surfing, or simply soaking up the sun. The northern end offers excellent waves for experienced surfers, while the southern end is calmer for families.
- Myall Lakes National Park – This vast wilderness of lakes, forests, and beaches surrounds Seal Rocks. Explore by kayak, canoe, or on foot along trails like the Mungo Brush Rainforest Walk.
- Boat Harbour Beach – A short drive north, this sheltered cove is a favourite for snorkelling and spotting sea turtles and rays in the clear shallows.
- Lighthouse Keepers’ Cottages & Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse – Perched on a dramatic headland, this historic lighthouse (1867) offers panoramic ocean views and a glimpse into the area’s maritime past. The cottages now serve as holiday accommodation.
- Whale Watching – From June to November, humpback whales migrate past the coast, and the headland near the lighthouse is one of the best vantage points.
Suggested Time to Spend
Seal Rocks is a small place best enjoyed as a half-day stop or an overnight stay. To truly unwind, book a night in one of the lighthouse cottages or a beachside cabin – you’ll have the sunset and sunrise all to yourself.
