Sea Lock is a narrow, tidal channel connecting the Hastings River to the Pacific Ocean, just south of Port Macquarie. This dynamic waterway is a gateway for boats and a prime spot for fishing, birdwatching, and watching the daily rhythm of the tide. The adjacent breakwall and sandy beaches offer a rugged coastal experience with panoramic ocean views.
Highlights & What to See
- Breakwall Walk: Stroll along the rock breakwall for sweeping views of the ocean and the lock. It's a popular spot for sunset photography and spotting dolphins or migrating whales (June–November).
- Fishing: The lock and nearby beaches are excellent for beach and rock fishing. Target species include bream, flathead, and tailor. Always check conditions and be mindful of tides.
- Birdwatching: The estuary and surrounding coastal scrub attract a variety of seabirds and waders, including pelicans, oystercatchers, and terns.
- Tacking Point Lighthouse: A short drive south, this historic lighthouse (built 1879) sits on a headland with stunning coastal views and a resident pod of dolphins often seen below.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 1–2 hours to explore the Sea Lock area. A quick walk along the breakwall and a look at the lock itself can be done in 30 minutes, but fishing or birdwatching may extend your stay. Combine with a visit to Tacking Point Lighthouse (15 minutes drive) for a half-day coastal outing.
