Sea Acres Reserve
Sea Acres Reserve is a pocket of ancient coastal rainforest that feels a world away from Port Macquarie’s beachside bustle. A raised boardwalk loops through a lush canopy of palms, ferns and towering eucalypts, with the sound of the Pacific Ocean humming in the background. It’s an easy, immersive walk that reveals the area’s rich Aboriginal heritage and incredible biodiversity – keep an eye out for swamp wallabies and crimson rosellas.
Highlights & What to See
- Rainforest Boardwalk: A 1.3 km elevated walkway weaves through the canopy, offering close-up views of strangler figs, staghorn ferns and the occasional goanna sunbathing on the timber.
- Sea Acres National Park: The reserve is the gateway to this protected coastal park, where walking trails lead to secluded beaches and dramatic headlands.
- Aboriginal Cultural Experience: Join a guided tour led by local Birpai elders to learn about bush tucker, traditional medicine and Dreamtime stories connected to the land.
- Wildlife Spotting: Early morning or late afternoon walks increase your chances of seeing the park’s resident koalas, pademelons and a dazzling array of birdlife.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow at least 1.5 to 2 hours to complete the boardwalk loop at a leisurely pace, including time to pause at the interpretive signs and spotted lookout platforms. If you plan to join a guided Aboriginal tour or explore the adjoining national park trails, budget half a day. The reserve is a perfect morning or late-afternoon outing, when the light filters through the canopy and the air is cool.
