Just south of Coffs Harbour, Sawtell is a laid-back beachside village that feels a world away from the busy highway. With its palm-fringed main street, excellent surf breaks, and a community that values good coffee and local produce, it's the kind of place where you'll want to linger longer than planned. The beach is the star, but Sawtell's charm runs deep—from its heritage-listed hotel to the weekly growers' market.
Highlights & What to See
- Sawtell Beach: A long stretch of golden sand with a patrolled swimming area and consistent waves for surfers. The southern end is quieter, perfect for a peaceful stroll.
- Bonville Creek: Just north, this calm waterway is ideal for kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, or a lazy float with the kids. Hire gear from the kiosk near the boat ramp.
- Muttonbird Island Nature Reserve: A short drive north in Coffs Harbour, this island is connected by a breakwall and offers superb views of the coast and the chance to see wedge-tailed shearwaters at dusk.
- First Avenue Shopping Strip: The village heart, with boutique clothing stores, a renowned bakery (try the vanilla slice), and several cafés serving excellent single-origin coffee.
- Sawtell Growers' Market: Held every Saturday morning at the showground, this is where locals stock up on seasonal fruit, artisan bread, and homemade preserves. Arrive early for the best pick.
Suggested Time to Spend
Spend at least a full day in Sawtell to soak up the beach vibe and explore the village. If you're on a road trip, an overnight stay allows you to enjoy a sunset walk on the beach and a leisurely breakfast the next morning. For surfers, two days give you time to hit different breaks along the coast.
