Port Kembla
Port Kembla, a gritty industrial port town just south of Wollongong, offers a surprisingly compelling mix of heavy industry history, wild coastal scenery, and a burgeoning arts scene. Don't let the steelworks and grain silos put you off — this is a place of raw contrasts, where you can watch colossal ships glide past rugged headlands and then explore a cluster of street-art-covered buildings in the old town centre. It's a detour that rewards the curious traveller with a genuine, unvarnished slice of coastal NSW.
Highlights & What to See
- Port Kembla Beach & Hill 60: A sweeping stretch of sand backed by a grassy headland with WWII bunkers and panoramic views. Hill 60 is perfect for whale-watching (June–November) and spotting surfers riding the consistent breaks.
- Port Kembla Heritage Walk: A self-guided stroll through the compact town centre, where you'll find a dozen or so striking murals painted on historic buildings, telling stories of the port's working-class roots.
- Port Kembla Breakwater: Walk out along the massive stone wall that shelters the harbour — it's a prime spot for fishing, sunset photography, and watching bulk carriers and container ships navigate the narrow entrance.
- Illawarra Brewing Company: A craft brewery housed in a former bank building on Wentworth Street, serving excellent local beers and wood-fired pizzas. A favourite with locals and a great pit stop.
- Lake Illawarra: Just south of town, this large coastal lagoon offers calm waters for kayaking, paddleboarding, and birdwatching along its foreshore reserves.
Suggested Time to Spend
Port Kembla is best as a half-day outing from Wollongong or as a brief stop on a coastal drive between Sydney and Kiama. Spend two to three hours exploring Hill 60, the breakwater, and the town's murals, then grab a beer and a bite at the Illawarra Brewing Company. If you're keen to walk the entire Heritage Walk or spend time on the beach, allow four hours. It's not an overnight destination, but it's a memorable detour that breaks up the coastal route.
