Kiama is a classic coastal town on the New South Wales South Coast, famous for its dramatic blowholes, historic lighthouse, and relaxed seaside vibe. Just a two-hour drive south of Sydney, it makes an easy day trip or a perfect stop on a self-drive itinerary along the Grand Pacific Drive. The town’s name means “where the sea makes a noise” in the local Aboriginal language, and you’ll soon hear why.
Highlights & What to See
- Kiama Blowhole – The main attraction, a natural rock formation that shoots seawater up to 25 metres high. Best at mid-to-high tide with a southerly swell.
- Kiama Lighthouse – Perched on the headland next to the blowhole, this 1887 lighthouse offers panoramic ocean views and is a great spot for whale watching (May–November).
- Little Blowhole – A smaller, less crowded version just south of town; worth a visit for a more intimate experience.
- Bombo Headland Quarry Geological Site – A dramatic landscape of hexagonal basalt columns, a photographer’s paradise and a significant geological site.
- Kiama Harbour & Surf Beach – Stroll along the harbour, watch fishing boats, or swim at the patrolled Surf Beach. The rock pools at the northern end are perfect for kids.
- Kiama Farmers Market – Every Wednesday and Saturday, stock up on local produce, artisan bread, and gourmet treats.
Suggested Time to Spend
You can see the main sights in a half-day, but to truly soak up the coastal atmosphere, plan for a full day. Arrive mid-morning, explore the blowhole and lighthouse, then grab fish and chips for lunch on the harbour. Spend the afternoon at the beach or walking the Kiama Coast Walk (a 10 km trail with stunning clifftop views). If you’re self-driving, Kiama is an ideal lunch stop between Sydney and points south.
