Nightcap National Park is a lush, subtropical rainforest sanctuary in the foothills of the Tweed Volcano, a short drive from Byron Bay and the coast. The park’s name comes from its misty, cloud-capped peaks, and it offers some of the most spectacular ancient rainforest walks in northern NSW. It’s a haven for wildlife — keep an eye out for the elusive Albert’s lyrebird and the tiny pouched frog.
Highlights & What to See
- Protesters Falls: A stunning waterfall plunging into a deep pool, named after the 1979 protests that saved the forest from logging. The easy 1.4 km return walk passes towering red cedars and giant stinging trees.
- Minnon Falls: A dramatic 100-metre cascade that flows over a basalt cliff into a wide, rocky pool. The walk is a moderate 4 km return through open forest and heath, with panoramic views from the top.
- Nightcap Range Lookout: A short, steep walk rewards you with sweeping views over the Tweed Valley to Mount Warning and the coast.
- Big Scrub Loop: A 6 km circuit that takes you through the largest remnant of the once-vast Big Scrub rainforest, with towering figs, strangler vines, and brush turkeys.
- Birdwatching: The park is a hotspot for rare species like the wompoo fruit-dove, regent bowerbird, and paradise riflebird.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend a half-day exploring one or two walks and a waterfall. If you want to do the Big Scrub Loop and a lookout, set aside a full day. The park is best visited between April and October when the weather is cooler and the waterfalls are flowing. You can combine it with a morning at Protesters Falls and an afternoon at Minnon Falls, with a picnic lunch in between.
