Mount Biri Biri, a striking volcanic peak rising from the lush hinterland near Port Macquarie, offers adventurous travellers a rewarding climb and sweeping views over the Hastings Valley and coast. This lesser-known gem is part of the ancient Gondwana rainforest remnants, providing a genuine escape into nature without the crowds.
Highlights & What to See
- Summit Views: The steep but well-defined track leads to a lookout with panoramic vistas of the Pacific Ocean, Port Macquarie, and the surrounding national parks – best in the early morning or late afternoon light.
- Rainforest Walk: The lower slopes are cloaked in subtropical rainforest, alive with birdlife including whipbirds and bowerbirds. Keep an eye out for ancient tree ferns and cycads.
- Wildlife Encounters: The area is home to eastern grey kangaroos and wallabies, particularly near dawn and dusk. You might also spot goannas basking on rocks.
- Geological Interest: Mount Biri Biri is a remnant of an ancient volcanic plug; the basalt columns and rock formations along the trail tell a story of the region’s fiery past.
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow a half-day (3–4 hours) for the return hike from the base, including time to soak in the summit views and explore the rainforest. The climb is steep in sections, so pace yourself and carry plenty of water. If you’re short on time, a quick up-and-down can be done in 2 hours, but you’ll miss the chance to linger. Combine with a picnic at the base or a leisurely drive through the nearby Comboyne Plateau.
