Mon Repos, just east of Bundaberg, is one of Australia’s most significant turtle rookeries and a must-visit for wildlife lovers. Each summer, from November to March, loggerhead, green, and flatback turtles haul themselves ashore to nest, and later the hatchlings scramble to the sea under the stars. The Mon Repos Turtle Centre provides an immersive introduction to these ancient mariners, with ranger-led tours that bring the experience to life.
Highlights & What to See
- Nesting turtles (Nov–Jan): Watch female turtles dig nests and lay eggs under moonlight – a deeply moving natural spectacle.
- Hatchling releases (Jan–Mar): See tiny turtles race to the ocean, a heart-stopping moment that’s pure magic.
- Mon Repos Turtle Centre: Interactive displays and a 3D theatre explain the turtles’ life cycle and conservation efforts.
- Beach walks: The quiet, sandy beach is lovely for a stroll any time of day, with coastal views and seabirds.
- Nearby Bundaberg Rum Distillery: A fun detour for a taste of Queensland’s famous rum.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for a full evening during turtle season – ranger-guided tours run from about 6:30pm to midnight depending on tides. If you’re visiting outside nesting season, allow one to two hours to explore the Turtle Centre and walk the beach. Mon Repos is compact, so you can easily combine it with other Bundaberg attractions in a day trip.
