Plummeting 120 metres into a lush, fern-filled gorge, Mapleton Falls is a breathtaking sight in the Sunshine Coast hinterland. The lookout offers uninterrupted views across the Obi Obi Valley, and on a misty morning, the falls seem to vanish into a cloud of spray. This is a place for quiet contemplation, short walks, and connecting with the ancient rainforest that cloaks the escarpment.
Highlights & What to See
- Mapleton Falls Lookout: The main event, just a 50-metre walk from the carpark. Peer over the edge as water cascades into the gorge below – best visited after rain when the flow is strong.
- Wompoo Circuit: A 2.5-kilometre rainforest loop that descends into the valley, passing strangler figs, palm groves, and the calls of wompoo fruit-doves. The track is steep in sections but rewards with close-up views of the falls from below.
- Picnic Area & Grassed Clearing: Perfect for a quiet lunch with a view. Keep an eye out for pademelons and brush-turkeys that often forage nearby.
- Birdwatching: The park is a haven for birdlife, including king parrots, satin bowerbirds, and the elusive noisy pitta. Bring binoculars and a field guide.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 30–45 minutes at the lookout and picnic area. If you tackle the Wompoo Circuit, allow 1.5–2 hours for a leisurely walk with stops. The track can be muddy after rain, so sturdy shoes are recommended. Combine with a morning or afternoon at nearby Kondalilla National Park for a full day of waterfall chasing.
