Manning Point
Manning Point is a sleepy coastal hamlet at the mouth of the Manning River, where the river meets the sea in a swirl of sandbars and surf. It’s a place for those who crave solitude, birdlife, and the raw beauty of a dynamic estuary system. The village itself is tiny — a pub, a general store, and a handful of holiday shacks — but the surrounding landscape is immense: endless beaches, river channels, and the untrammelled wilderness of Crowdy Bay National Park.
Highlights & What to See
- Manning Point Beach: A long, wild stretch of sand perfect for beachcombing, fishing, and watching the waves roll in. It’s patrolled in summer, but outside that, it’s just you and the seabirds.
- Manning River mouth & sand spit: Walk out to the shifting sand spit where the river meets the Pacific. It’s a prime spot for birdwatching — look for oystercatchers, terns, and the occasional sea eagle.
- Crowdy Bay National Park: Just north of town, this park protects coastal heath, dunes, and the iconic Diamond Head — a dramatic headland with walking trails and panoramic ocean views.
- Fishing & crabbing: The Manning River estuary is famous for flathead, bream, and mud crabs. Grab a tin of bait and a handline, or launch a tinny from the public ramp.
- Manning Point Pub: The heart of the village — cold beer, hearty pub grub, and a deck overlooking the river. A classic stop for a sunset schooner.
Suggested Time to Spend

Most travellers come for a day trip from Port Macquarie (45 minutes south) or as a quick detour on the drive between Sydney and Coffs Harbour. If you have a campervan, the Manning Point Holiday Park is a great base for a night. Spend the first afternoon exploring the beach and river mouth, then the next morning hiking in Crowdy Bay National Park before moving on.
