Just a short drive north of Port Macquarie, Kattang Nature Reserve is a pocket of coastal wilderness that feels a world away from the town centre. This 51-hectare reserve protects a stunning stretch of headland, with dramatic sea cliffs, secluded beaches, and a rich diversity of native flora and fauna. The reserve’s walking trails offer immersive experiences through coastal heath and littoral rainforest, with the constant soundtrack of waves crashing below.
Highlights & What to See
- Coastal Walk to Tacking Point Lighthouse: The reserve’s highlight is the 3.5 km return walk from the car park to the historic Tacking Point Lighthouse (built 1879), with jaw-dropping ocean views and excellent whale-watching (May–November).
- Shelly Beach: A small, sheltered beach at the base of the headland, accessible via a steep track – perfect for a quiet picnic or a refreshing dip, but watch for rips.
- Birdwatching Paradise: Keep an eye out for white-bellied sea eagles, peregrine falcons, and a variety of honeyeaters and robins in the heath and woodland.
- Spring Wildflowers: From August to October, the heath bursts into colour with flannel flowers, boronias, and banksias – a treat for botanists and photographers.
- Aboriginal Heritage: The reserve lies within the ancestral lands of the Birpai people; look for interpretation signs that share stories of traditional use of the area.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 1.5–2 hours exploring the main coastal walk and taking in the views. If you add a stop at Shelly Beach or linger for birdwatching, budget up to half a day. The reserve is best visited in the morning or late afternoon to avoid the midday heat and catch the best light for photography.
