Rising dramatically from the coastal plain south of Sydney, the Illawarra Escarpment is a lush, rainforest-clad ridge that offers breathtaking views, world-class bushwalking, and a cool, green escape from the beach crowds. This ancient sandstone escarpment, part of the Great Dividing Range, is a biodiversity hotspot and a haven for hikers, birdwatchers, and anyone craving a dose of wild nature. The escarpment’s lookouts and trails deliver sweeping panoramas of the Pacific Ocean, the industrial poetry of Port Kembla, and the patchwork of farms and towns below.
Highlights & What to See
- Sea Cliff Bridge: A spectacular cantilevered road that clings to the cliffside, with a walking track offering front-row seats to the ocean and escarpment views.
- Illawarra Fly Treetop Walk: Stroll among the canopy of a temperate rainforest on a steel walkway 25 metres high, with a spiral tower that rises another 45 metres for 360-degree views.
- Mount Kembla: A historic mining village and gateway to the escarpment’s best walking tracks, including the steep but rewarding Mount Kembla Summit Walk.
- Macquarie Pass National Park: A pocket of subtropical rainforest with cascading waterfalls, picnic spots, and the challenging but beautiful Macquarie Pass walking track.
- Kiama Coast Walk: A stunning coastal route that links Kiama to the escarpment’s edge, passing blowholes, rock pools, and the famous Kiama Lighthouse.
- Nan Tien Temple: Australia’s largest Buddhist temple, set in the foothills of the escarpment, with serene gardens, a vegetarian café, and a fascinating cultural museum.
Suggested Time to Spend
Give the escarpment at least a full day to do it justice. Start early at the Sea Cliff Bridge and Illawarra Fly, then spend the afternoon exploring a walking track like Mount Kembla or Macquarie Pass. If you’re a keen hiker, two days allow you to tackle the longer escarpment trails and also visit Kiama and Nan Tien Temple. The escarpment is most rewarding in the cooler months (April to October) when the air is crisp and the views are clear.
