Rising dramatically from the coastal plain south of Sydney, the Illawarra Escarpment is a lush, rainforest-clad ridge that offers breathtaking views, world-class bushwalking, and a cool, green escape from the beach crowds. This ancient sandstone escarpment, part of the Great Dividing Range, is a biodiversity hotspot and a haven for hikers, birdwatchers, and anyone craving a dose of wild nature. The escarpment’s lookouts and trails deliver sweeping panoramas of the Pacific Ocean, the industrial poetry of Port Kembla, and the patchwork of farms and towns below.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

Give the escarpment at least a full day to do it justice. Start early at the Sea Cliff Bridge and Illawarra Fly, then spend the afternoon exploring a walking track like Mount Kembla or Macquarie Pass. If you’re a keen hiker, two days allow you to tackle the longer escarpment trails and also visit Kiama and Nan Tien Temple. The escarpment is most rewarding in the cooler months (April to October) when the air is crisp and the views are clear.
