Fraser Island, also known by its traditional name K'gari, is a world-heritage-listed island off the coast of Queensland that feels like a natural wonderland. This is the largest sand island on Earth, and its raw beauty—from pristine freshwater lakes and ancient rainforests growing out of sand to the famous dingoes and shipwreck of the SS Maheno—makes it an unmissable stop for any traveller exploring Australia's east coast. The island is accessible only by 4WD, so you'll need a rugged vehicle or join a tour. Come for the surreal landscapes, stay for the wild swimming and wildlife encounters.
Highlights & What to See
- Lake McKenzie – A stunning perched lake with impossibly clear, turquoise water and white silica sand. Perfect for swimming and a picnic.
- Eli Creek – A fast-flowing freshwater creek where you can float downstream on a inflatable tube. The water is crisp and refreshing.
- SS Maheno Shipwreck – The rusting remains of a luxury liner that washed ashore in 1935, a photographer's dream as the sun sets.
- Indian Head – A rocky headland offering panoramic views of the coastline and a great spot to see sharks, rays, and turtles in the water below.
- Rainforest on Sand – Drive through towering satinay and brush box trees that somehow thrive in the sand, a truly unique ecosystem.
- Lake Wabby – A deep green lake formed by a sand blow, popular for swimming and cliff jumping.
Suggested Time to Spend
You need at least two full days to really experience K'gari's highlights without feeling rushed. A common itinerary is to arrive early, spend the first day exploring the southern lakes and shipwreck, then overnight at a resort or camping spot. The second day you can tackle the northern beaches, Indian Head, and Champagne Pools. If you're short on time, a day tour from Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach can give you a taste, but you'll miss the magic of staying overnight.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Hervey Bay – The main gateway to the island, with whale-watching tours and a relaxed waterfront vibe.
- Rainbow Beach – Colourful sand cliffs and a launching point for 4WD tours to K'gari.
- Maryborough – A historic gold-rush town with beautiful heritage buildings and the birthplace of Mary Poppins author P.L. Travers.
- Bundaberg – Famous for its rum distillery, botanical gardens, and the nearby turtle nesting sites at Mon Repos.
- Great Sandy National Park – The mainland section of the park offers walking trails and lakes that are less crowded than the island.
