Fraser Island, also known by its traditional name K'gari, is a world-heritage-listed island off the coast of Queensland that feels like a natural wonderland. This is the largest sand island on Earth, and its raw beauty—from pristine freshwater lakes and ancient rainforests growing out of sand to the famous dingoes and shipwreck of the SS Maheno—makes it an unmissable stop for any traveller exploring Australia's east coast. The island is accessible only by 4WD, so you'll need a rugged vehicle or join a tour. Come for the surreal landscapes, stay for the wild swimming and wildlife encounters.

Highlights & What to See

Suggested Time to Spend

You need at least two full days to really experience K'gari's highlights without feeling rushed. A common itinerary is to arrive early, spend the first day exploring the southern lakes and shipwreck, then overnight at a resort or camping spot. The second day you can tackle the northern beaches, Indian Head, and Champagne Pools. If you're short on time, a day tour from Hervey Bay or Rainbow Beach can give you a taste, but you'll miss the magic of staying overnight.
