Forster is a laid-back coastal town on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, cradled between the crystal-clear waters of Wallis Lake and the Tasman Sea. It's the kind of place where life slows to the rhythm of the tides, making it a perfect base for water lovers and nature enthusiasts. With its twin-town vibe (it's often paired with Tuncurry across the bridge), Forster offers a classic Aussie beach holiday with a side of pristine national parks and a burgeoning café scene.
Highlights & What to See
- One Mile Beach: A stunning stretch of white sand and rolling waves, ideal for swimming, surfing, and long walks. The southern end is patrolled in summer.
- Wallis Lake: This vast, shallow lake is a haven for kayaking, paddleboarding, and sailing. Hire a boat or join a cruise to explore its secluded islands and oyster leases – the local Sydney rock oysters are a must-try.
- The Booti Booti National Park: Just south of town, this park offers spectacular coastal walks, including the short but scenic walk to the top of Cape Hawke for panoramic views. Keep an eye out for whales during migration season (June–November).
- Forster Main Beach: Right in the heart of town, this patrolled beach is perfect for a quick dip and people-watching. The adjacent park has picnic tables and a playground.
- Wallis Lake Fishermen's Co-op: Grab fresh local seafood – prawns, fish, and oysters – straight off the boats. It's a true taste of the region.
Suggested Time to Spend
Two to three days gives you enough time to hit the highlights: a day for the beaches and lake, another for a national park walk and a seafood feast, plus a morning to explore the town's cafés and boutiques. If you have more time, add a day for a boat trip or a surf lesson. Forster also works well as a stopover on a drive between Sydney and Brisbane, but it deserves at least an overnight stay to appreciate its relaxed pace.
