Echo Point
Perched on the headland where the Hastings River meets the Tasman Sea, Echo Point is Port Macquarie's most dramatic coastal lookout. The constant roar of waves crashing against the rocky cliffs below lives up to its name — on windy days, the sound truly echoes. This is the place to feel the raw power of the Pacific and watch humpback whales breach during their annual migration (June–November). A short, easy walk from the town centre, it's an essential stop for any coastal itinerary.
Highlights & What to See
- Whale-watching platform: From June to November, this is one of the best land-based spots on the NSW coast to see humpbacks. Bring binoculars and be patient.
- Coastal walk: The paved track from Town Beach to Echo Point is an easy 20-minute stroll with interpretive signs about local Indigenous history and geology.
- Echo Point Lookout: The main viewing area offers sweeping panoramas of the coastline, from Tacking Point Lighthouse in the south to the distant peaks of the hinterland.
- Sunrise photography: Early risers are rewarded with golden light striking the rock platforms and, in winter, whale blow silhouetted against the rising sun.
- Rock platforms: At low tide, explore the rock pools teeming with small crabs, sea anemones, and shells. Watch for slippery surfaces and sneaker waves.
Suggested Time to Spend
Plan for 30 minutes to an hour if you're just taking in the lookout and snapping photos. If you're combining it with the full coastal walk from Town Beach (which also passes the historic Port Macquarie Museum and the iconic Hastings River), allow 1.5–2 hours. It's an ideal breakfast or sunset stop — pack a takeaway coffee from a nearby café and sit on one of the benches to soak in the atmosphere.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
