Dorrigo National Park is a lush, ancient rainforest sanctuary in the heart of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia World Heritage Area. Just an hour's drive west of Coffs Harbour, this park offers a dramatic transition from dry eucalypt forests to cool, misty cloudforests draped in moss and fern. The centrepiece is the spectacular Dorrigo Skywalk, a cantilevered walkway that juts out over the canopy, offering breathtaking views of the Bellinger Valley and the coast beyond. For international travellers, it's an accessible taste of Australia's prehistoric landscapes, with well-maintained walking trails and a superb visitor centre.
Highlights & What to See
- Dorrigo Skywalk: A 70-metre-long, 21-metre-high steel walkway that floats above the rainforest canopy — unmissable for panoramic views and bird's-eye photos.
- Crystal Shower Falls walk: A 2.6 km loop through towering brush box and coachwood trees, ending at a stunning waterfall you can walk behind. The boardwalk and suspension bridge add to the adventure.
- Wonga Walk: A 6.6 km circuit that plunges deep into the rainforest past giant stinging trees, strangler figs, and the chance to spot satin bowerbirds and pademelons.
- Glade Picnic Area & Never Never Creek: Perfect for a peaceful dip in cool, clear water surrounded by subtropical greenery. The picnic tables are a great spot for lunch.
- Dorrigo Rainforest Centre: Start here for interactive exhibits on the World Heritage values, Aboriginal culture, and the park's unique flora and fauna. Friendly rangers can advise on trail conditions.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least half a day to appreciate the park’s highlights. Arrive early to enjoy the Skywalk in soft morning light, then tackle the Crystal Shower Falls walk (allow 1–1.5 hours). If you're keen on a longer hike, the Wonga Walk takes 3–4 hours; pack a picnic and plenty of water. For a relaxed visit, combine the Skywalk and a short stroll to the falls in 2–3 hours. The park is well-suited to a self-drive day trip from Coffs Harbour or Port Macquarie.
