Buderoo National Park
Buderoo National Park is a coastal gem just south of Port Macquarie, where ancient rainforest meets wild beaches. This protected haven offers a raw, untamed slice of New South Wales' mid-north coast, perfect for travellers seeking solitude and nature immersion. With its dramatic sea cliffs, pockets of littoral rainforest, and a network of walking trails, it’s a place where the bush literally meets the ocean — and you can feel the salt spray on your face as you hike.
Highlights & What to See
- Coastal Walking Track: This 8.5 km return trail from Shelly Beach to Lighthouse Beach is the park's signature walk. It winds through banksia scrub and eucalypt forest, with jaw-dropping views of the coastline. Keep an eye out for migrating whales (May to November) and sea eagles soaring overhead.
- Lighthouse Beach: A stunning, unpatrolled surf beach at the southern end of the walking track. It’s a prime spot for a picnic, but be aware of strong rips — swimming is not advised. The beach is also a key nesting site for sea turtles (November to March).
- Rainforest Gully: A short, boardwalk-style loop that plunges you into a cool, fern-filled microclimate. Listen for the whip-crack song of the eastern whipbird and watch for crimson rosellas flitting between the palms.
- Aboriginal Heritage: The park lies within the traditional lands of the Birpai people. Look for midden sites along the coast and interpretive signs that tell stories of the area's deep Indigenous history.
- Birdwatching: Over 150 bird species have been recorded, including the rare glossy black-cockatoo. Bring binoculars for the best sightings.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least half a day to properly experience Buderoo National Park. The coastal walking track takes around 3–4 hours return if you’re walking at a steady pace, but allow extra time for beach stops, photography, and birdwatching. If you’re short on time, you can combine the Rainforest Gully walk (30 minutes) with a quick visit to Lighthouse Beach for a condensed 1.5-hour taste. Sunrise is magical here, with the light catching the sea cliffs, and it’s also the best time to spot wildlife.
