Bongil Bongil National Park
Just south of Coffs Harbour, Bongil Bongil National Park is a serene coastal haven where lush rainforest meets the Pacific. This compact park is a haven for birdwatchers and bushwalkers, with a network of walking trails that wind through paperbark swamps, eucalypt forests, and mangroves. The park’s centrepiece is the stunning Bongil Beach, a long stretch of golden sand perfect for solitary walks. It’s a place where the soundtrack is birdsong and the rustle of casuarinas, and the air smells of salt and eucalyptus.
Highlights & What to See
- Bongil Beach: A wild, undeveloped beach ideal for a peaceful stroll or a picnic with ocean views. Watch for whales during migration season (June–November).
- Paperbark Forest Walk: A short boardwalk loop through a swamp paperbark forest, teeming with birdlife – keep an eye out for the rare wompoo fruit-dove.
- Mangrove Boardwalk: Explore the intricate root systems of mangroves at low tide; interpretive signs explain the ecosystem’s importance.
- Birdwatching: Over 140 species have been recorded, including azure kingfishers, white-bellied sea eagles, and the elusive glossy black-cockatoo.
- Pine Creek Walking Track: A 3.5 km return walk through dry eucalypt forest to a secluded section of Pine Creek – great for spotting wallabies and goannas.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is ample to experience the park’s highlights. Arrive early to enjoy the cool morning air on the beach and then tackle the Paperbark Forest Walk and Mangrove Boardwalk – both under 30 minutes. If you’re keen on birdwatching, allow an extra hour to sit quietly at the bird hide near the picnic area. For a longer visit, combine the Pine Creek Walking Track with a relaxed beachside lunch. The park is small enough that you won’t need a full day, but it’s a lovely stop on a road trip between Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie.
