The Billabong Point Walk is a serene coastal stroll that winds through a patchwork of paperbark wetlands, coastal heath, and rocky headlands on the southern edge of Port Macquarie. This easy, family-friendly trail offers a quiet escape from the town centre, with boardwalks and well-formed paths leading to sweeping ocean views and a chance to spot resident kangaroos grazing at dusk.
Highlights & What to See
- Coastal boardwalk & wetlands – The raised boardwalk weaves through a paperbark swamp, where you might see waterbirds, turtles, and the occasional swamp wallaby.
- Billabong Point lookout – A short side trail climbs to a rocky vantage point with uninterrupted views of Lighthouse Beach and the distant Camden Haven coastline.
- Kangaroo spotting – The grassy clearings near the car park are a favourite grazing spot for eastern grey kangaroos, especially in the late afternoon.
- Wildflowers in spring – From August to October, the heathland bursts into colour with banksias, wattles, and flannel flowers.
- Lighthouse Beach access – A track leads down to the southern end of Lighthouse Beach, a patrolled surf beach popular with walkers and dog owners (on-leash).
Suggested Time to Spend
Allow 45 minutes to 1 hour for the full 2.5 km loop, taking time to pause at the lookout and scan the wetlands for wildlife. The walk is best done in the late afternoon when the light is golden and kangaroos are most active. If you plan to combine it with a swim or a longer beach walk, budget 1.5–2 hours.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining

- Tacking Point Lighthouse – Just a short drive north, this historic lighthouse offers panoramic views and a prime whale-watching spot (June–November).
- Sea Acres Rainforest Centre – A 10-minute drive away, explore a boardwalk through remnant littoral rainforest and learn about local Aboriginal culture.
- Port Macquarie town centre – After your walk, grab a coffee or fish and chips at the Settlement City precinct or along the Hastings River foreshore.
