Barrington Tops is a breathtaking wilderness of ancient rainforests, wild rivers, and dramatic basalt peaks, rising from the Hunter Valley to over 1,500 metres. This World Heritage-listed Gondwana rainforest is a paradise for hikers, birdwatchers, and anyone craving pure, untamed nature. The crisp mountain air and endless trails make it a refreshing detour from the coast.
Highlights & What to See
- Gloucester River & Gloucester Tops: Follow the scenic drive to Gloucester Tops Lookout for panoramic views over the valley, then hike to the stunning Gloucester River waterfalls.
- Mount Barrington & Polblue Swamp: Tackle the summit walk through snow gums (in winter) and subalpine meadows to the highest point, with sweeping views. Polblue Swamp is a serene boardwalk through sphagnum moss and wildflowers.
- Gondwana Rainforest Walks: Explore the Antarctic beech forests on the Antarctic Beech Walk or the more challenging Mount Allyn walk, where ancient trees and moss-draped trunks create a prehistoric atmosphere.
- Birdwatching & Wildlife: Spot superb lyrebirds, king parrots, and even the elusive platypus in the clear streams. The park is a haven for birdlife, especially around the campgrounds.
- 4WD & Camping: For adventurous travellers, the network of 4WD tracks (like the Barrington Trail) leads to remote camping spots such as Gummi Falls or Careys Peak.
Suggested Time to Spend
Dedicate at least a full day to experience the highlights – a short walk, a scenic drive, and a picnic. For hikers, two to three days allows you to tackle longer trails like the Barrington Trail loop or combine multiple short walks. Overnight camping adds a magical dimension, with star-filled skies and dawn bird calls. If you're short on time, a half-day from Gloucester or Dungog is enough for the Gloucester Tops loop and a waterfall visit.
Nearby Areas Worth Combining
- Gloucester: The charming timber town at the foot of the range, with historic buildings and the Bucketts Way scenic drive.
- Dungog: A heritage-listed town with a classic main street, ideal for a coffee stop before heading into the park.
- Port Macquarie: The coastal hub offers beaches, the Koala Hospital, and a vibrant café scene – a perfect contrast to the mountains.
- Hunter Valley Wine Country: Just south, the vineyards of Pokolbin and Cessnock make a fine pairing with the wilderness – think wine tasting after a bushwalk.
- Myall Lakes National Park: North of Port Macquarie, this lakes-and-beaches park is great for kayaking and birdwatching, adding a water element to your trip.
