Just a short drive north of Port Macquarie, Arakoon National Park is a compact coastal gem where lush rainforest meets dramatic sea cliffs and historic convict ruins. This park packs a surprising amount of variety into its small area, making it an ideal half-day escape for nature lovers and history buffs alike. The air is thick with the scent of eucalyptus and salt, and the sound of crashing waves provides a constant, soothing soundtrack.
Highlights & What to See
- Smoky Cape Lighthouse: Perched on a headland, this working lighthouse offers panoramic views of the coastline. The short walk to the lighthouse is rewarded with whale-watching opportunities (June–November) and a peek into the keeper's cottage.
- Trial Bay Gaol: Explore the haunting ruins of a 19th-century prison built by convicts. The gaol's sandstone walls and eerie cells overlook the bay, and informative signs bring its grim history to life.
- Goolawah Campground & Beach: A serene, vehicle-accessible campground right behind the dunes. The beach here is perfect for a swim or a long walk, and you can often spot kangaroos grazing at dusk.
- Little Bay Walking Track: A gentle 1.5 km loop through coastal heath and forest, leading to a secluded beach. Keep an eye out for goannas and lyrebirds.
- Fish Rock Cave (snorkel/dive): Just offshore, this underwater cave system is a renowned dive site. Even non-divers can appreciate the clear waters from the shore.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 3–4 hours exploring the park, which allows time to walk the lighthouse loop, tour the gaol ruins, and dip your toes in the ocean. If you plan to camp or do a longer hike, budget a full day. The park is compact enough that you can easily combine it with a morning in Port Macquarie and an afternoon drive to South West Rocks.
