Yamba is a laid-back coastal gem on the NSW North Coast, where the Clarence River meets the sea. This former fishing village has evolved into a beloved surf and holiday town without losing its easygoing charm. Think long, empty beaches, national park headlands, and a Main Street dotted with excellent cafes and boutiques. It's the kind of place where you can surf in the morning, kayak a river estuary by lunch, and watch a sunset over the ocean from a clifftop lookout – all without a hint of pretension.
Highlights & What to See
- Yamba Main Beach – A sweeping patrolled beach with gentle waves, perfect for swimming and beginner surfers. The adjacent park makes for a great spot to picnic and watch the world go by.
- Angourie Point – A world-class right-hand surf break just south of town, legendary among boardriders. Even if you don't surf, the headland walk offers dramatic coastal views and a chance to spot whales (June–November).
- Yuraygir National Park – Stretching north from Yamba, this park protects pristine coastal heath, dunes, and lakes. Walk the coastal track from Angourie to Brooms Head for a classic NSW nature experience.
- Clarence River – The mighty river offers endless water-based adventures: kayak through mangrove-lined channels, hire a houseboat for a few days, or join a fishing charter for bream and flathead.
- Yamba Heritage Walk – A self-guided tour past historic buildings including the 1880s Yamba Lighthouse, the old Pilot Station, and charming Federation-era cottages. Pick up a map from the visitor centre.
Suggested Time to Spend
Yamba rewards a slow pace. Most travellers find two to three days ideal: one day for the beaches and surf, one for the national park and river, and a third to simply relax and explore the town's cafe scene. If you're on a road trip, even an overnight stop gives you a taste of the town's magic – but you'll likely want to extend your stay.
