Known as the 'Scottish Town in Australia', Maclean is a charming riverside settlement on the Clarence River that wears its Celtic heritage with pride. The main street is lined with tartan-painted lamp posts and shopfronts, and the local bakery sells genuine Scotch pies. But beyond the novelty, Maclean offers a relaxed, authentic slice of Northern Rivers life, with a scenic riverfront, historic buildings, and a thriving community of artists and food producers.
Highlights & What to See
- Tartan Trail: Follow the self-guided walk to spot over 300 tartan-painted poles, each representing a Scottish clan. Pick up a map from the visitor centre.
- Clarence River: Take a stroll along the riverfront parklands or hire a kayak to explore the broad, peaceful waterway. Birdlife is abundant, including pelicans and black swans.
- Maclean Lookout: A short drive or steep walk up to this lookout rewards you with panoramic views over the river, the town, and the distant mountains.
- Historic Buildings: Check out the 1890s post office, the grand Maclean Court House, and the beautifully restored Maclean Hotel. The local museum (housed in a former bank) has a good collection of pioneer and Indigenous artefacts.
- Maclean Markets: Held on the fourth Saturday of the month, the riverside markets are a great spot to pick up local produce, crafts, and homemade preserves.
Suggested Time to Spend
Half a day is plenty to soak up the Scottish atmosphere, wander the main street, and walk the Tartan Trail. If you want to add a kayak trip or a leisurely lunch by the river, budget a full day. Maclean works well as a lunch stop on a drive between Coffs Harbour and Byron Bay, or as a base for exploring the lower Clarence Valley.
