Dorrigo is a lush, misty mountain town on the edge of the New England Escarpment, best known for its World Heritage-listed rainforest and cascading waterfalls. It’s a serene escape from the coast, offering cool air, birdlife, and walking trails that feel a world away from the heat and crowds of the beaches below.
Highlights & What to See
- Dorrigo National Park – The star attraction: explore the Skywalk (a raised boardwalk through the rainforest canopy) and the Wonga Walk, which leads you to crystal-clear creeks and the base of the magnificent Crystal Shower Falls.
- Dangar Falls – A short walk from town, these broad falls plunge into a deep pool; there’s a picnic area and a lookout for great photos.
- Dorrigo Rainforest Centre – Start here for park information, a café with valley views, and an interactive display on the Gondwana rainforest ecosystem.
- Dorrigo Mountain Lookout – Just off the Waterfall Way, this viewpoint offers sweeping panoramas of the Bellinger Valley and out to the coast on clear days.
- Never Never Creek – A peaceful swimming spot surrounded by ancient ferns; perfect for a cool dip after a bushwalk.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors allocate a full day to Dorrigo, which allows time for the main National Park walks and a stop at Dangar Falls. If you’re short on time, a half-day can cover the Skywalk and a quick look at the falls, but the real magic is in the longer trails like the Wonga Walk (about 2.5 hours return). For those who want to linger, a night in one of the town’s historic B&Bs lets you experience the forest at dawn or dusk.
