Nightcap National Park
Deep in the lush hinterland of northern New South Wales, Nightcap National Park is a sanctuary of ancient rainforests, dramatic waterfalls, and volcanic remnants. Part of the Gondwana Rainforests World Heritage Area, this park offers a wild, immersive escape from the coast, with trails that wind through towering Antarctic beech trees and past crystal-clear swimming holes. It’s a place where the air smells of damp earth and eucalyptus, and the sound of cascading water is never far away.
Highlights & What to See
- Protesters Falls: A stunning 30-metre waterfall named after the rainforest activists who fought to protect this area. The short walk leads to a viewing platform and a cool plunge pool perfect for a swim.
- Terania Creek Picnic Area: A serene spot with ancient figs and a gentle creek – ideal for a picnic and a dip after a bushwalk.
- Nightcap Range Walk: A challenging 8 km return trek that climbs through subtropical and cool temperate rainforest to the summit of Mount Nardi, offering panoramic views from Byron Bay to the Border Ranges.
- Minya Falls: A lesser-known gem with a 40-metre drop accessible via a steep but rewarding walk through eucalypt forest.
- Big Scrub Flora Reserve: One of the last remnants of the once-vast Big Scrub rainforest, with towering red cedars and a rich diversity of birdlife.
Suggested Time to Spend
To truly appreciate the park’s ancient beauty, plan for at least a full day. You can easily spend the morning hiking to Protesters Falls and exploring Terania Creek, then tackle a longer walk like the Nightcap Range Walk in the afternoon. If you’re short on time, a half-day focused on the southern section (Protesters Falls and Minya Falls) is worthwhile. Overnight camping is not available within the park, but nearby towns like Nimbin or Lismore offer accommodation for a deeper immersion.
