Perched at the highest point of the Blue Mountains, Mount Victoria is a tranquil village that feels a world away from the bustle of Sydney. With its crisp mountain air, historic guesthouses, and sweeping views over the Megalong Valley, it’s the perfect base for exploring the wilder western reaches of the Blue Mountains region. The village retains a charming 19th-century character, with a main street lined with heritage buildings, antique shops, and cosy tearooms.
Highlights & What to See
- Mount Victoria Lookout – A short walk from the village centre rewards you with a breathtaking panorama of the Megalong Valley and the Kanimbla Valley, especially dramatic at sunset.
- Historic Grand Canyon Walk – One of the Blue Mountains’ most spectacular trails, this loop descends into a lush, fern-filled gorge with sandstone cliffs and waterfalls. Start from the Evans Lookout car park nearby.
- Zig Zag Railway – A heritage steam train that winds through a series of switchbacks and tunnels, offering a nostalgic journey with stunning valley views (currently under restoration; check status before visiting).
- Mount Victoria Museum – Housed in a former railway station, this small museum tells the story of the town’s railway and pioneering past.
- Megalong Valley – Drive down the steep, winding road into this wild valley for horseback riding, bushwalking, and a taste of rural mountain life.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most travellers find that a half-day to a full day is enough to soak up the village atmosphere and tackle one or two walks. If you’re a keen bushwalker or want to explore the Zig Zag Railway and Megalong Valley, plan for a full day or even an overnight stay. Mount Victoria also works well as a stopover on a multi-day Blue Mountains road trip, breaking the journey between Katoomba and the western escarpment.
