Smiths Lake is a serene coastal lake and village on the NSW Mid North Coast, about 30 minutes north of Forster. It's a peaceful escape where calm, tannin-stained waters meet white sandy shores, fringed by paperbark forests and national park. This is a place for quiet paddling, birdwatching, and unhurried days by the water — a perfect contrast to the busier beaches further south.
Highlights & What to See
- Kayaking & paddleboarding on the lake's glassy surface — hire gear at the general store or bring your own to explore secluded inlets and spot black swans, pelicans, and sea eagles.
- Wallis Lake just to the north — a larger, deeper lake ideal for sailing, fishing, and oyster tasting at local shacks.
- Booti Booti National Park — walk the dramatic headland track from Cape Hawke to Elizabeth Beach for panoramic views of the coast and lake system.
- Smiths Lake itself — swim at the calm, shallow lake beach or drive five minutes to Seal Rocks for a stunning surf beach and historic lighthouse.
- Local seafood — grab fresh oysters and prawns from the Smiths Lake general store or nearby wholesalers for a picnic by the water.
Suggested Time to Spend
Smiths Lake is best as a two- to three-day stop, allowing time for a full day of paddling and exploring the lake, plus a day to hike in Booti Booti National Park and visit Seal Rocks. If you're on a road trip between Sydney and Brisbane, an overnight stay is enough for a sunset paddle and a morning swim, but you'll wish you had longer.
