Plunging dramatically into a vast wilderness of eucalypt forests and sandstone cliffs, Dangars Gorge is a hidden gem within the Oxley Wild Rivers National Park, about 30 minutes east of Armidale. This spectacular gorge offers a series of breathtaking lookouts, cascading waterfalls, and serene swimming holes that feel a world away from the coastal crowds. It's a must for self-drive travellers exploring the New England region, combining epic views with peaceful bushwalks.
Highlights & What to See
- Dangars Falls Lookout: The star attraction – a sheer 120-metre drop where the Salisbury Waters plunge into the gorge. Visit in the morning for the best light and rainbows in the spray.
- Gorge Rim Walk: An easy 1.5 km return track that hugs the cliff edge, offering ever-changing perspectives of the waterfall and the rugged chasm below.
- Swimming at the Gorge Pool: After a moderate descent (and ascent) on the Dangars Falls Walking Track, you’ll reach a deep, cool pool at the base of the falls – a blissful spot for a dip on a hot day.
- Wildlife spotting: Keep an eye out for eastern grey kangaroos, wallabies, and a dazzling array of birdlife, including wedge-tailed eagles soaring above the gorge.
- Picnic by the creek: The area near the carpark has shaded picnic tables and barbecues, perfect for a lunch with a view.
Suggested Time to Spend
Most visitors spend 2–3 hours at Dangars Gorge, which allows time for the main lookout walk and a swim if you’re feeling energetic. If you’re keen to explore the longer trails (such as the 8 km return walk to the gorge floor), plan for a half-day. The site is best visited as a morning or afternoon stop on a self-drive itinerary through the New England region.
